Today is the 8th day of Zul-Hijjah and tomorrow will be the 9th day of Zul- Hijjah the day of Arafaat . It is called ‘Yaumal Arafah’ (The day of Arafah). It is the day when the Hujjaj (Hajj pilgrims) assemble in the plain of Arafat, six miles away from Makkah Mukkaramah, and perform the most essential part of the prescribed duties of Hajj which is the rite of wukuf, (that is standing before sunset on Arafat).

For pilgrims performing Hajj it is the high point of Hajj without which it would be considered incomplete. The Day of Arafah is the most significant day. As the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Arafah is the Hajj’ (Ahmed) and is the essence and heart of the pilgrimage. On the day of Arafah from noon until sunset, Muslims performing Hajj gather on the Plain of Arafah, reciting Istighfar (asking for forgiveness) and making supplications – marking the Day of ‘Arafah. The Day of Arafah is also known as Yawm Al-Waqf (the Day of Standing), referring to the fact that pilgrims stand in front of their Lord for long periods of time, asking for His Divine Mercy.

However, for those who are not  performing the annual "Hajj" it is a "Mustahabb" (a desirable act) to "fast" in the day of Arafaat which is the ninth day of Zul-Hijjah. It is the sunnah of the prophet. The Prophet of Islam used to "fast" on this day (al Nisa'i and Abu Dawud). In another saying the Prophet's wife Hafsah, may Allah be pleased with her , said: "Four things the Messenger of Allah never neglected: Observing fast on the day of 'Ashura , 'Arafat , three days every month, and offering fajr sunnah prayers early in the morning." — Muslim. These statements are proof that fasting on the ninth day of Zul-Hijjah , the day before 'Eid ul-Adha was a lifelong practice of the Prophet, peace be upon him, as his wife reported.

On the 9th day of Zul- Hijja, it is desirable for muslims all over the world who do not witness the annual Hajj to spend the day in fasting. It was reported from Abu Qataadah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was asked about fasting on the Day of ‘Arafaah. He said, “It expiates for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year.” narrated by Muslim. Abu Hafsah, may Allah be pleased with him , reported that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said: "Fasting on the Day of 'Arafah absolves the sins for two years: the previous year and the coming year, and "fasting" on 'Ashura, (the tenth day of Muharram) atones for the sins of previous years." — Reported by all except Al-Bukhari and At-Tirmidhi.

May the Almighty Allah accept from us!
