To begin with, the late Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardaunan Sokoto(KBE) and the late Sir (Khaliha) Muhammad Sanusi I (KBE) of blessed memories were the best of friends and In-laws. Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardaunan Sokoto is from the royal Fulani Torankawa clan of Sokoto Caliphate while Sir (Khaliha) Muhammad Sanusi (I) is from the royal Fulani Sullubawa clan of Kano Emirate.
Prior to becoming Emir, Sanusi held the title of Ciroman Kano and in 1947 he became a member of the regional House of Assembly. He was also appointed a minister without portfolio in 1958 alongside other emirs like Usman Nagogo. Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I (KBE) was the Acting Governor of Northern Nigeria (1957) and Emir of Kano from 1954 to 1963. He was a powerful Emir that had substantial influence in the colonial Northern Nigeria. The power tussle between him and Sir Ahmadu Bello led him to abdicate his throne.
Some people attributed reasons; such as: the appointment of Sir Kashim Ibrahim (KBE) as the substantive Governor of North Region by Sir Ahmadu Bello (KBE) instead of Sir Muhammad Sanusi I (KBE) who once acted for six months in 1957 when the then Governor of North Region, Sir Gawain Bell (a white man) appointed him to act for him while on Leave . Sir Kashim's appointment was said to be influence by the Borno Mafias and or a result of the Sokoko vs Borno politics dating back to many years. Other people attributed its to the battle of supremacy between Kano Native Authority (NA) and North Regional government. Some were of the views that some Northern politicians were not comfortable with the influence of Emir Sanusi's influence for that they pitched him against his dear friend and in-law.
However, it is important to note that:
(1) Emir Muhammad Sanusi (I) was instrumental in the formation of Northern People Congress (NPC),
(2) Emir Muhammad Sanusi (I) helped Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna to emerge as the president General of the NPC,
(3) Emir Muhammad Sanusi (I) brought many groups into the NPC especially Businessmen and Youth western educated elite,
(4) Emir Muhammad Sanusi (I) helped Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna to get out of prison during his imprisonment in Zaria by the Sultan of Sokoto over an alleged tax (Jangari) fund diversion. Sir Ahmadu Bello was later discharged and acquitted and
(5) Emir Muhammad Sanusi (I) second son Alh. Abubakar Sanusi (Wanban Kano) was married to the Sardauna's first daughter (Hajia Inno).
May the Almighty Allah have mercy on both Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardaunan Sokoto (KBE) and Emir (Khaliha) Muhammad Sanusi I (KBE).
