Any student of legislative studies knows that probe or investigation of high profile legislators is not new in Nigerian politics. We have had the probes of senior members of legislature with some surviving while others gotten rid off. Whether Senate president Sakari and Senator Dino Melaye will survive the investigation or not only time shall tell. Is the investigation real or arrengee? Will they survive it or not?
SENATE ENWEREME: Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo was alleged to have backed Enwerem against Okadigbo.Enwerem easily defeated Okadigbo with 66 votes to Okadigbo's 43 votes. Enwerem did not last very long. A Nigerian Senate committee began investigating Enwerem for the allegations against Enwerem for falsifying his name, and caused a controversy as to whether Enwerem's actual real name was Evan or Evans. Enwerem was removed from office on November 18, 1999, in an ouster spearheaded by allies of Chuba Okadigbo .
SENATE PRESIDENT OKADIGBO: in 2000, he was said to have been falsely charged of corruption. Nigeria's parliament has voted to impeach its president, Chuba Okadigbo, following demands for his resignation over allegations of corruption. The vote, which was passed by 81 votes to 14, came after an earlier motion calling for Mr Okadigbo to step down. His impeachment follows the resignations of deputy senate president Haruna Abubakar, and the majority leader Samaila Mammam.
SENATE PRESIDENT WABARA:Mr. Wabara was accused of receiving N55 million from a former Minister of Education, Fabian Osuji, to pass the ministry’s budget in 2005. Mr. Wabara was charged alongside four others. The former senate president denied the charges brought against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC. He was impeached.
SENATE PRESIDENT DAVID MARK: Senate president David Mark was once investigated and later cleared of the allegations.
SPEAKER BUHARI: Salisu Buhari is a former speaker of the House of Representatives in Nigeria . He was impeached from office in 1999 after it was discovered that he forged his university certificate from Toronto University.
SPEAKER MASARI(2003-2007): There was allegation of not having a Post- graduate Diploma by Speaker Aminu Bello Masari. Some people once argued that Masari’s claim of obtaining a postgraduate diploma in water quality control and management from Middlesex Polytechnic in the United Kingdom was false, saying the school did not offer the course in the year Masari claimed to have obtained.
SPEAKER ETTEH: The speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives, Patricia Etteh, resigned just hours after saying she would step aside temporarily to enable lawmakers to debate a report indicting her over a contract scam. Etteh's deputy, Nguroje Babangida, also resigned."Following advice from my family members, friends and colleagues, I, Patricia Olubunmi Etteh hereby resign my appointment as the speaker of the House of Representatives with effect from today", Etteh said in her resignation.
SPEAKER BANKOLE: The speaker was alleged not to have done NYSC.The then Speaker Makes Public His NYSC Discharge Certificate which brought the allegation that the speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Oladimeji Bankole, skipped the mandatory one-year National Youth Service to an end.
However, Senate president Abubakar Bukola Saraki is being investigated over importation of car with fake duties. The Range Rover car cost N298 million. Similarly, N72 million is supposed to be paid as duties which was said not to have been paid. Senator Dino Melaye is facing certificate issue.
May God bless Nigeria!
