ETHNIC PROFILING OF CRIMINALS IN NIGERIA

To begin with, in my observation, there is a dangerous trend of ethnic profiling in Nigeria. Permit me to ask, what is an ethnic or religious or racial profiling? In simple term , it is the act of "suspecting" or "targeting" a person on the basis of assumed "characteristics" or "behaviour" of an ethnic or a religious or a racial group rather than on individual "suspicion".

However, In my thought, the causes of crimes are very complex and numerous . In addition, the causes of crimes and criminality are not universal. Social problems; such as: Unemployment, Poverty, parental neglect, low self-esteem, alcoholism and drug abuse etc., can be connected to why people commit crimes.

In my thought, "crimes" and "criminality" have neither ethnic nor religious Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). DNA is the cell’s hereditary material and contains instructions for development, growth and reproduction. DNA is passed from generation to generation in humans and many other organisms.

Cesare Lambroso and his contemporaries' Biological theories of "crime" which asserted a linkage between certain biological conditions to crimes have since been challenged by many scholars.

It is sad to note that some "individuals" either due to "mischief" or "ignorance"are working very hard to attribute "crimes" to ones "ethnic" or "religious" background. In my view, this is a dangerous path which must be retraced by all well meaning Nigerians. For instance, if commiting "crimes" or engaging in social problems have "ethnic" or religion or "region" In Nigeria, permit me to ask, what ethnic or religion or region are :

(1) Kidnappers?
(2) Boko Haramists?
(3) Cultists?
(4) Prostitutes?
(5) Yahoo Yahoo boys?
(6) 419ners?
(7) Human traffickers?
(8) Ritual killers?

Let's treat every human being on his individual "virtues" not on the basis of his "religion" or "ethnic" group. There are both good and bad eggs in every ethnic or religious group.Criminals should and or must not be shielded by their "kinsmen" or "religious" group. Criminals must answer their individual names not their "religion" or "ethnic" group. For us to get it right, criminals should and or must be treated as criminals regardless of their "ethnic" or "religious" backgrounds.
