Innalillahi Wainna Ilaihi Rajiun! May the Almighty Allah have mercy on him.
It is sad to hear about the news of the death of Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah at the age of 91. His Highest, Sheikh Muhammad bin Rashid Al-Maktoum of Dubai described the late Sheikh Sabah as the father of Kuwait, the beating heart of the Gulf and the noble prince of humanity.
That was a man who as Kuwait's foreign minister for decades and later an Emir benefited us a lot. The schools built by donations from his country through him benefited a lot of Nigerians both Muslims and Christians who attended Sheikh Sabah College, Kaduna (later SMC, Kaduna).
Many people did not know that Sardauna Memorial College ,SMC Kaduna (formally known as Sheikh Sabah) and Sultan Bello Primary School, Kaduna were built by an Islamic organisation through the donations of Kuwaiti Government and others.
Kuwaiti Government through Late Sheikh Sabah of Kuwait donated generously when the Late Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi and others formed Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI) which is the society for the victory of Islam in 1962 and wanted to build its headquarters . The aims of JNI among others are the promotion the of Islamic literature in Nigeria languages, the building of Islamic centres of learning, the building of mosques and the promotion of unity among the Ummah.
Late Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi in his Biography with Ismaila Tsiga called, where I stand, said:
"The Saudi gave us £50,000 then, and every year thereafter for many years. It was this money that enabled us to build our own school, the Sultan Bello Primary School in Unguwar Sarkin Musulmi.... An outstanding contribution in this regard was the donation by the Kuwaiti Government of £300,000.The money was initially given in response to our appeal for funds to construct our headquarters... We now decided that the Kuwaiti donation was too much to commit in construction of the headquarters, so we asked them for permission to use half of it to build a secondary school instead. This was approved and, therefore,£150,000 was used to start off the Sheikh Sabah College, named after the Kuwaiti Emir..." (P. 107).
CP, Usman Faruk, the former Governor of North Western State in his book The Life and Times of Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi; lessons for the Muslim Ummah said :
"...With this very bountiful donations in their coffers, Sheikh Gumi advised that half of the money donated by the Kuwaiti Government should be used to establish the Sheikh Sabah College in memory of the King of Kuwait...Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi had been the life- wire of the JNI because the donations from Middle East did not stop with the death of the Sardauna in 1966 but with the death of Sheikh Gumi in 1992..."(PP. 13-14).
One needs to read Ahmadu Bello Sardauna of Sokoto ,Values and leadership in Nigeria written by John N. Paden to further appreciate the contributions of Sheikh Sabah to Da'awa in Nigeria. What a great soul!
"With the departure of Sheikh Sabah, we lose a wise leader who devoted his life to the service of his country and to Arab and Islamic nations,” the Saudi foreign minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, wrote on Twitter.
May the Almighty Allah have mercy on late Sheikh Sabah of Kuwait . Ameen!
