"Politicians campaign in poetry and govern in prose "-Mario Matthew Cuomo (The 52nd Governor of New York).
Cuomo's assertion means that, the poetry of campaigning is very lofty, and gauzy, full of possibility, a world where all problems are solved. The prose of governing, on the other hand, is "messy" and "maddening", full of compromises and half-victories that leave a sour taste in one's mouth.
Virtually all our politicians promise us milk and honey. A promise of Heaven and Earth. A politician of the Second Republic was once said to have promised to build an Airport at the back of each Nigerian house. Wow! Another one was said to have promised to provide a Tap of "Fura da Nono"(process Millet and Milk, a northern drink). Wow! A politician of the
Second Republic was also said to have boasted of his state having many “minerals resources ” like Coke, Fanta and Mirinda and Brahma! Thought, often said, humorously.
Our politicians in Nigeria, usually adopt a strategy of if you want to catch a monkey, behave like a banana. If you want to catch a dog, behave like a bone. If you want to catch a fish, behave like river and If you want to catch a man, behave like a woman or money. Most politicians in Nigeria don't mean what they say!
It is another election year around the corner. What goes around comes around. It is a time for soul searching. A time for reflection! "You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today "-Abraham Lincoln.
Electorate must be careful of movement from "frying pan" to "fire".The electorates must be wary of Old wine in a new bottle. The electorates must think outside the political box. The electorates have the Powers of enthronment and dethronment.
Let no politician hides under religious or ethnic cocoon for electioneering campaign. Let his past or present speaks for him. Let no serving leader promises us anything again and again, let him or her tell us his achievements in the last four years. Let all the new commers their past speak for them and nothing more.
Any mistake the by the electorates, will make them Lick their wounds continuously, for the next four years. It is the duty of all the electorates devoid of "sentiments" to "sieve" the wheat from the chaff. The electorates, if they are to get it right, they must put collective as against individual interests first and nothing more.
May God bless Nigeria!
