In my observation, the strict conditions recommended by the  APC's committee for restructuring before recognizing Independent candidates will not succeed in addressing the most fundamental issue that leads to the increasing agitation for Independent candidature. Please come with me!

In my understanding, the clamour for "Independent Candidature" in our political system is in direct response to the "Impunity" of our powerful governors, political godfathers and moneybags politicians. The said categories of politicians, In my observation, are the movers and shakers of our political process with an overbearing influence in our modern day politics.

These categories of politicians often denied party flatforms to competent, credible and popular candidates due to their selfish interest. In our modern day politics, we have had enough cases, where credible, competent, and popular candidates loss primary elections due to lack of "money" or "godfather" or state governor's anointment.

The APC's committee accepted the inclusion of Independent Candidacy into our electoral process with the following conditions as its recommendations:  "The person shall not be a registered member of a political party at least six (6) months before the date set for the elections in which he intends to contest, his nominators must not be members of any registered political party, the said candidates must pay a deposit to INEC in the same range as the non-refundable deposit fee payable by candidates sponsored by political parties to their parties and such amount shall be determined by an Act of the National Assembly and the candidate must meet other qualification requirements provided for by the Constitution and any other law."

Some of the reasons given by the committee for putting the said stringent conditions, are to check- mate the attention seeking politicians who might make it very difficult for INEC to manage the numbers of contestants in elections.

It is my personal belief that part of the strategy to use in order to stop the impunity of our powerful political forces is to recognize Independent candidature in our electoral process.

It is also true that, elections management or conduct with too candidates is very tasking. However, In my humble suggestion, we must find a way of "striking a balance" in such a way that we  can accommodate credible, competent and popular candidates and at the same time stop attention seeking politicians from participating .

In my view, sacrificing genuine, credible, competent and popular candidates in order to stop attention seeking politicians from the contest will only allow the continuation of the Impunity of state governors, moneybags politicians and godfathers in our modern day politics.

May God bless Nigeria!
