To begin with, some people have opined that this is a “good decision” but at the “wrong time”! There is never going to be a “right time” for an unpopular decision to be made. What is unpopular is not necessarily “BAD” and what is popular is not necessary “GOOD”. “Sometimes what is good is not popular and what is popular is not necessarily good” -Chief Audu Ogbe, Minister of Agriculture.
Are some senators sleeping in the national assembly when discussions of national importance are on-going? Could it be that some senators have abandoned their “primary assignment” to local politics? The primary responsibilities of every senator are : (1) law making, (2) oversight function, and (3)representation. Senators’ capacities or abilities or efficiencies or competencies in a democratic set up are measured by the number of “Motions” and “Bills” sponsored by them. They are also gauged by their capacities to participate in “debate” on “national issues” or their constituency or budgetary issues on the floor of the senate. Come with me please, I will come back to this discussion later.
“…take difficult decisions that may inflict immediate pains, but would be for the interest of the country and the government in the long run…drawn from our experience is that you will have more goodwill and more authority to do the difficult things at the beginning of your term than at the end”- Tony Blair, former British Prime minister.
“Governance is about making the right decisions, however difficult or painful they may sometimes be and no matter the disadvantages they bring to bear on the political life of someone in position of constitutional leadership”- Kashim Shettima, Governor of Borno State.
Some people have opined that: “Hypocrisy is when a senator/lawmaker sits in the hallowed chamber, passed a budget without any provision for subsidy payment but only to turn around and oppose the removal of subsidy by the Federal Government on the social media”
The year 2016 budget proposal was presented to the national assembly without “SUBSIDY PROVISION”. However, none among the senators reportedly opposed to removal of subsidy through the social media platforms raised any issue or “point” of “order” during the budget “debate” or “defense” at committees stage or before the passage of the budget for “first” or “second” or “third” and the “final” reading. Those senators did not alert Nigerians or their constituencies or colleagues or the presidency that subsidy was not provided for.
Had the senators alerted or alarmed Nigerians or their colleagues or the presidency about none provision for subsidy and they were “defeated” or “ignored” they would have gotten the moral rights to reject it and even lead protest on it.
Were they always sleeping in the house? Is it that they abandoned legislations and representations at the national assembly for local politics?
May God bless Nigeria!
