REMEMBERING THE HOSPITABLE PEOPLE OF KAIAMA LG WITH PAIN

To begin with, when I read the story of the continuous suffering of the people of Kaiama Local Government, Area of Kwara state, over bad roads in the Daily Trust of Monday, March 5, 2018 , which knew about 10 years ago , I felt duty -bound to write this piece on Kaiama.

With the federal government Yam export drive, Kaiama LG could contribute a lot with good roads in place. Kaiama is a farming community with huge potential of "Yam" farming. Kaiama is said to be the largest producer of "Yam flour" in North Central Nigeria. Yam is grown all year round in Kaiama. It has a fertile land which does not even need fertilizer.

My conscience will hardly forgive me, if I don't share with the people of Kaiama on the "pain" of decades of neglect . Flying the rough - dusty road of Illorin to Kaiama is "hell". An ordinary journey of about 3 hours, might take you about 7 hours due to bad roads.

As it were, in 2008, when I served as a corps member in Government Day Secondary School, Kaiama Local government area of Kwara state, I stand to be challenged, but In my observation, the people of Kaiama LG neither know the existence of state government nor federal government, in terms of roads maintainance , rehabilitations and constructions.

Right from NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp,Yikpata, Kwara state , corps members get all sorts of scaring stories by scaremongers on Kaiama and Baruten LGs. As it were, all corps members posted to Kaiama and Baruten LGs which share border with Benin Republic considered the areas as a dead or punishment zones.

I could remember vividly when some of our colleagues were openly crying and screaming soon after our postings.

Stories of of poor roads, G. S. M service , hospitals, water supply and electricity were upon told, but upon reaching Kaiama we found it hospitable even though with some lacks. We remain gretefull and highly indebted to the people of Kaiama.

Kaiama LG has weekly Yam markets at Kaiama, Gwarya, Aboki, Dageji, Kara, and Lara etc.,which are terribly affected with bad roads. The roads from Kaiama-Illorin; Kaiama-Kusobosu; Kaiama-Bode Saadu;  Kaiama -Kisi; Kaiama- New Bussa; and Kaiama-Kainji etc., are in bad shape.

The government of Kwara state should , please, come to the aid of the suffering people of Kaiama LG. Some of the roads that link one to Kaiama LG are federal roads (interstate roads). The federal government should, also please, come to the aid Kaiama people.
