PDP'S 2019 TICKET: HAS SENATOR MAKARFI FORSEEN USED AND DUMPED?

Permit me to comment on the PDP's presidential ticket ahead of 2019 general elections. It is a fact that, Senator Ahmad Muhammad Makarfi had used his leadership skills and image to"stabilize" the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, following its electoral defeat of 2015 as well as its subsequent controversial chairmanship by Senator Ali Madu Sheriff.

However, It was alleged by some political observers that, Senator Makarfi had assisted Governor Wyeson Wike of Rivers State to install Prince Uche Secondus National chairman in "return" for presidential ticket.They further buttress their allegations by arguing that, Senator Makarfi had blocked all contestants from Kaduna state from contesting for any national position zone to Northwest . It was said that, of all positions zone to the Northwest geopolitical zone, none was contested by Kaduna politicians .

Senator Makarfi has in respect of the recent  defections to PDP by some heavyweight politicians while meeting with the PDP's stakeholders of Kogi state said: “Everybody is welcome but we must be careful so we don’t give the impression that it doesn’t pay to be loyal. We must not create a situation whereby you have a home and you have a visitor and when the visitor comes, you give him a guest room to stay, then the next day, he wants the master’s bedroom and then the next day, you leave the home for him...does that happen?”

I have argued somewhere that, few hours before the PDP's national convention, it was crystal clear to many political observers that the "election"was between Professor Tunde Adeniran who was alleged to be sponsored by former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Prince Uche Secondus who was alleged to be sponsored by Governors Wike , Fayose, Makarfi and others.

Some analysts had argued that with the emergence of Prince Uche Secondus who was alleged to have been assisted by Senator Makarfi as the then acting national chairman of the party , the coast for Makarfi's Presidential ticket "barring" any last minute changes was cleared.

Similarly, It is clear to most "political observers " that, the "new chief power broker" of PDP is Governor Wike. However, It seems like Governor Wike has "strong interest" on Governor Tambuwal candidature . Perhaps it is in line with this speculation that informs Senator Makarfi's comment. It was alleged that Governor Wike had invested a lot resources in the litigation between Senator Makarfi and Senator Sheriff's factions of the PDP up to the Supreme Court before he got the "soul" of the party from Senator Sheriff.

Soon after the defeat of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2015 presidential elections, President Jonathan and his men forced the former Governor of Bauchi state, Ahmad Adamu Ma'azu who led the party to defeat to resign .It was alleged that Senator Sheriff was brought to replace Governor Mu'azu in view of his "deep pocket". The argument advanced by supporters of Sheriff's chairmanship was that having lost power the PDP, the party needed someone with "deep pocket" in order to run it successfully.

With the emergence of Senator Sheriff as the party's chairman its fortunes amongst its chieftains and other Nigerians began to dwindle in view of his alleged role in the Boko Haram Insurgency. It is important to state that, the allegation against Sheriff has not been proven by any court of law or security agency.

More so, It was alleged that Governor Wike and some like minds in the PDP felt that, the "image" of the party under Senator Sheriff needed much to be desired as such they brought Senator Makarfi to redeem its "image".

Senator Sheriff who felt used and dumped by the party refused to vacate his chairmanship position arguing that he was the legitimate chairman of the party an argument which led to the factionalization of the party and a litigation that lasted for about two years. However, some analysts argued that had Governor Wike not stood firmly Senator Sheriff would have taken over the party.

In my observation, Governor Wike as the Chief Power broke of PDP will be very instrumental in determining who picks the party's ticket. Who picks the party's ticket only time will tell.
