For Kaduna State teachers, the month of March, 2018 is the month of "anticipation" for "promise fulfilment" on the newly introduced teachers' welfare package of salary increament of 32.5%, stoppage of Tax from their salaries, Motorcycles loans and provision of Housing for rural teachers by Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufa'i.
The government of Kaduna state should be aware that, as stakeholders, we would hold its accountable as well as responsible for all its promises on the newly introduced welfare package for teachers in the state. The government of Kaduna state should and or must this time around go beyond the usual empty promises of Nigerian politicians in the implementation of its newly introduced welfare package for teachers .
As a keen observer of the Kaduna State Educational sector Reform, one can't wait to see the genuine implementation of all the newly proposed welfare package. Our teachers should receive their rewards both here on earth and in the heaven.
In my view, If we must get it right in the Educational sector, we must continue to introduce incentives that would attract our best brains into the teaching profession.
In my observation, If the government of Kaduna State successfully implement all the newly introduced welfare package to teachers in the state, it will go along way in improving the welfare of its teachers .
However, as stakeholders we have been following with keen interest on the following promises:
ON SALARY : The government of Kaduna state has pledged to increase teachers salaries by 27.5% with addittional 5% to teachers posted to rural areas as an incentive to them from March, 2018.
ON TAXATION : The government pledged that from March, 2018 the Pay As You Earn tax would no longer be deducted from teachers salaries, of both primary and secondary schools in order to improve their take home pay.
ON TRANSPORTATION: The government pledged to give motorcycles loans to teacters in order to ease their transportation challenges to schools.
ON HOUSING : The government has pledged for Housing incentive of three-bedroom accommodation for Headmasters, and two-bedrooms flats for class teachers that would be posted rural areas.
Permit me to remind the government on a very critical issue which has a direct impact on the educational sector development to which, In my observation, we pay little or no attention to . This issue is nothing but the issue of monitoring and supervision of teachers .Strict monitoring and supervision would go along way in ensuring punctuality and dedication among teachers.
In my findings, the teachers of private schools, even though, most of them receive salaries less than the teachers in public schools, they take their jobs more seriously than the teachers in public schools due to strict monitoring and supervision.
In my take , it will be very commendable, if the government can fulfill at least 50% of the said promises. As we patiently wait for the genuine implementation of all the said promises. May God bless Kaduna state.
