NO HIDING PLACE FOR GHOST WORKERS: VBN TO BE EXTENDED TO MICROFINANCE BANKS

Minister of Finance,Mrs Adeosun referred the CBN governor to the discovery that prior to the deadline for obtaining the BVN, there had been movement of a large number of salary accounts of federal employees from commercial banks to microfinance banks. However, it is observed that,microfinance banks are likely being used as "conduit pipe" for corruption by  those who collect double salaries because BVN is not a requirement there.

Banks Verification Number(BVN) no doubt is our success story of this decade. The technology has the power to "detect " how many bank accounts an individual has which will in turn show how many places you are receiving salaries and pensions from. In Nigeria we had had cases where an individual working as local government staff at the same a federal government staff receiving double payments. We had had cases of a worker receiving the salaries of five (5) people. We had had cases where the pensions of death people were being collected for years. However, with the BVN technology is very difficult.

There is the issue of workers "absenteeism ". In the public service perhaps due to low level of supervision a lot of staff do not go to work yet they collect salaries. My advise to these workers regardless of their faith is to "fear" the Almighty God and change completely. If you are collecting salaries without going to work you are cheating yourself, the young, the orphans,people from other faith, the old and even the death ones whose resources are being used to pay you for doing nothing. I advise the government to device a means of making sure that all its employees goes to work regularly.

More so, there are some categories of workers who go to work late and close early. As far as I know, work in the public service begins by 8.am and closes by 4.Pm. A lot of workers do not go to work on time at the same time they close early. Some workers do not go to work on Fridays as if it is a public holiday. Some workers only go to work on Mondays of the weeks while other only go there twice a Month. Some workers only show up when salaries are about to be paid. Ironically, these categories of workers are the first to complain about non payments of salaries. Anyway I don't support non payments of salaries. Salaries should and must be paid regularly.

The main objective of micro finance bank is to provide loans to co-operatives formed by persons engaged in small and cottage industries. Micro finance banks provide soft loans to cooperatives. Furthermore, Microfinance banks finance small and medium scale enterprise.  Micro finance banks have been assisting in providing credit facilities to small scale industrialists.

Conditions in Microfinance banks are made with less strictnesses in order to facilitate socio- economic development but activities of Ghost workers have now make the authorities to watch them closely.
