Nigeria is set to assist Guinea Bissau, a West African country with $500,000 (N180million) electoral kits and a number of vehicles to support the conduct of legislative election . Of what benefits to our country? Our foreign assistance to countries should stop being for nothing sake.We could help, but not for nothing sake.
Nigeria's foreign policy from 1960 to date has often been described as father Xmas or flamboyant by the scholars of International relations cum foreign policy. For how long will we continue with this foreign policy? The superpowers of the world do not just assist a country without a take home benefit. Even foreign Aid to poorer nations is not for nothing benefit. Why is our own different?
Nigerians are yet to see the "benefits" of the trillions of Naira spent (or still being spent) from Independence to date in the name of foreign assistance . In my view, it is high time we change it whereby a "take home" benefit follows our assistance to other countries as in other climes.
A sound foreign policy should be capable of benefitig its citizens .We assisted many countries in Africa: politically, militarilly , economically, socially and morally etc. Nigeria has "gained" "little "or "nothing"at all, no even a deserved respect, from its generosity ,especially to its African brothers, from Independence to date. We have been a Big brother to Africa , but all for nothing, no even a deserved respect.
Nigeria's role in South Africa during the Apathied, Liberia and Sierra Leone during their civil wars, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique during their Independence struggles etc., can never be overemphasised .
If we must get it right , we must change this our long held foreign policy tradition. In my observation, most of the countries we assisted in the past, took us for granted, perhaps due to the fact that ,we are just assisting without conditions or demanding for something in return. Enough of our father Xmas approach!
Some of the countries we assisted have even abandoned us at the time when we needed their payback support for the election of non- permanent members seat of the UN, security council. Some are even alleged to be sabotaging us while others are competing with us for the permanent seat of the UN, Security Council from Africa should it materializes.
It is high time we start asking for something in return as a take home package whether in kind or in cash. This is the tradition all over the world.
May God bless Nigeria!
