Permit me to borrow from a popular saying which says: "health is wealth" A healthy population is also a wealthy population.
The ongoing rumour in town is that the government of Kaduna State has banned or will soon ban Pharmacies and patent Medicine (Chemist)shops. This rumour calls for serious concern, especially among the poor masses at a time when Malaria and Typhoid fevers are biting hard.
Thanks to Daily Trust Sunday (30/10/16) which reported that: "The Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN) has sealed up 373 premises consisting of 15 illegal Pharmacies and 358 patent medicine stores for various offences including operating without registration with PCN ,failure to renew premises license, dispensing ethical products without the supervision of a pharmacist and poor sanitary conditions among others" The Director of Inspection and monitoring of PCN ,Pharmacist Anthonia O. Aruya said a total of 435 premises comprising 44 pharmacies and 391 patent medicine shops were visited by the PCN enforcement team out of which 15 pharmacies and 358 patent medicine stores were sealed for various offences.
The Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN) is a Federal Government Agency established by Act 91 of 1992 (now Act CAP 17 LFN 2004) and is charged with responsibility of regulating and controlling the education, training and practice of pharmacy in all aspects and ramifications, including the regulation of
Pharmacy Technicians and Patent and Proprietary.
In view of the above we could see that ,the said action was carried out by a federal government body which has the power. I strongly believe that Pharmacies and patent shops are needed especially among the poor masses who can not afford hospitals bills. Pharmacies and Chemists contribute a lot to our health system. However, I also strongly believe that the practice should be strictly regulated. It should not be made a business venture by all and sundry. It seems that we have thrown the practice to the dogs. All manners of people are in the business.Any right thinking person must insist on professionals as well as license practitioners which is in our best interest.
No one will contemplate stopping or closing professional and licence pharmacies and patent medicine shops, but any responsible government or citizen will or must insist on well regulated sector for "quality" and "standard". The present situation in my observation is full of "QUACKS" or Fortune seekers. Our health matters!
May God bless Nigeria!
