To start with, In electoral politics, strategy essentially wins election and not zoning. Zoning and or rotational presidency which has no constitutional backing in Nigerian constitution was officially killed in 2011.In Nigerian politics ethno-religious sentiments play a greater role in electoral victory than issue based.
The opposition PDP from the onset prioritizes winning "election" against "zoning" by leaving its ticket open. However, Had Governor Wike won the primaries, the PDP's chances in 2023 would have been very slim in view of a number of popular candidates in the governing APC from the south.
Now that the former Vice president, Alh. Atiku Abubakar won the primaries, barring any last minute changes he will likely pick Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state who is an "Igbo man" who may likely gain the supports of South- East as an "Igbo man" in abroad and the South-south where he comes from. The two loyal zones of the opposition PDP . As opposition PDP's candidate is from the north it will largely gain the sympathy of northerners in view of our ethno-religious sentiments in politics.
The only thing that will make the 2023 general elections more competitive is for the governing APC to field a northern candidate with a running mate from the South-west geopolitical zone otherwise the opposition PDP will likely win the 2023 elections in view of our ethno-religious sentiments. Winning elections in Nigerian politics are largely not issues based!
Begining from 2015 the governing APC has largely become politically strong in the north and the south-west geopolitical zones. Had the opposition PDP fielded a "southern" candidate the governoning APC which is yet to decide its position on zoning would have no option than to field a southern candidate.
In my thought, if the governoning APC fields a southern candidate in the name of zoning or fairness it will largely lose 2023 elections in the north. Having two strong political parties for healthy competition is highly needed in politics. It will give the electorate the opportunity to make a better choice.
All patriotic Nigerians are looking forward to a political environment where "issues" and not "sentiments" will determine electoral victory. In my observation, come 2023 a party cum politician with the best strategy will likely win the 2023 general elections.
May God bless Nigeria!
