Some "commentators" have viewed the declaration of Vice President, Prof.Yemi Osibanjo, SAN for the office of the president in the 2023 general elections as a "betrayal" or "disloyalty" and or "both" to his political benefactor, Senator Bola Ahmad Tinubu who has equally declared for the said office. Permit me to state here that this write up is not an "endorsement" for the "candidature" of Prof. Yemi Osibanjo, but it only serves as a "thought" by a student of "power" in order to provoke discussion on what is obtainable in global politics.
Politics is a game of all possibilities. To agree and disagree on issues is not necessary bad in politics. "Policies" or "programmes" or "approaches" or "beliefs" or "ideology" and or "interest" often leads to political difference among "brothers" or "cousins" or "In-laws" or "friends"and or "neighbors" in politics. However, the electoral often have the final say via the general elections.
In my view, our concern should be on a candidate whose policies and programs will better the lot of Nigerians. The cardinal objective of democracy is to better the lot of the people. Let us go for a candidate whose "manifesto" is realizable .Our conversation on leadership should go beyond the issue of "godfather" or "godson" or "region" or "zone" and or "age". We must elavate our discussion to ones "capacity" or "competence" or "patriotism" or "integrity" and or result orientation.
IN AMERICA:
In 1871 election, three American biological brothers: Senator Willard Saulsbury, Governor Gove Saulsbury, and Senator Eli Saulsbury contested against one another for one senatorial seat. After a repeated dedlock elections, the Incumbent Willard Saulsbury backed Eli Saulsbury to emerge victorious instead.
IN INDIA:
Brothers Tathagata Roy and Sougata Roy contested against each other in 2014 election in India. Mr Sadhu Yadv once contested against his sister Rabri Devi. Shazia IImi contested against his sister Aijaz IImi. Brother- In-laws Odisha Bolangir and Kalikesh Narayan once contested against each other.Dasrath Tirkey contested against a sitting MP Manohar Tirkey as In-laws. Satya Ranjan Dasmunshi contested against his Sister-In-Law a sitting Congress MP, Deepa Dasmunshi in 2014. Col Dhani Ram Shandi once contested against his son- In- Law and Dev Adhikari contested against his uncle Shaktipada Adhikari etc.
IN BRITISH:
Biological brothers , Edward Miliband contested for the leadership of British Labour Party of 2010 against his elder brother David Miliband. Accordingly too, the Brexit politics in UK split a lot of family members on ideological stands which led to political contest against each other. Annuziata Rees -Mogg left her brother's Jecob Rees-Magg Tory MP's party and contested against the party.Jo Johnson resigned from his roles as Member of Parliament and cabinet minister of his brother's Boris Johnson government.Jo Johnson voted to remain in the E.U. in the 2016 Brexit referendum––even as his brother helped lead the campaign to leave.
IN NIGERIA:
In the first Republic, Isa Ribadu, the son of the first Nigeria's Minister of Defence, Mahamudu Ribadu joint Action Group (AG) to contest against his father Ribadu of Northern People Congress (NPC). Senator Ahmad Babba-Kaita of the All Progressives Congress (APC) contested and won against his older brother Kabir Babba-Kaita of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2018.Two Brothers. Kenneth Okonkwo (a.k.a Andy), a famous Nollywood actor, and Luke Okonkwo (a.k.a Aguma) contested for Nsukka /Igbo-Eze South federal constituency seat at the national House of Representative under People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014 etc.
In my observation, at this stage, we are all "onlookers" in the political parties' primary elections for the general elections of 2023 at all levels. We have little or nor say on who becomes the candidates of our major political parties. From 1999 to date, states governors of the two major political parties with the national spread to win general elections are the movers and shakers of Nigerian politics. Any candidate that will emerge from the primaries of the two major political parties will definitely be a candidate who majority of governors of his political party will rally round. We look forward to day where the electorate will have the power to determine their candidates from the beginning to the end of the electoral process.
May the Almighty God guide our powerful governors of the two major political parties to put the interest of our dear country beyond their personal interests in their respective political parties primary elections.
May God bless Nigeria!
