Permit me to "comment"on a "Bill"seeking to "raise"the educational "qualification" for the offices of the "president" and "governors" from secondary school "certificate" to at least Higher National Diploma, HND, or its equivalent.

In my view, our "quest"for credible leaders must go beyond just one's "certificate" or "age". Our legislators are yet to address the "unjust" practices of "age limits" for employment in both public and private sectors of our economy and here comes another issue.

A leader is an "inspirer"and an insperer is he who possesses the qualities that guide people to do things well.  An effective leader is not necessarily the most educated person . In my thought, the most important qualities of a leader include: accountability, vision, decisiveness, courage, resilience, empathy, compassion, humility, and integrity. It is not about "certificates" at all.

"Ignorance is not the same as illiteracy. Knowledge is not the same as literacy, or, even the same as the acquisition of educational certificates, or, academic ranks. Some of the most highly literate Nigerians, and the most highly educated, by virtue of their certificates and ranks, are some of the most ignorant over many crucial areas of natural and human existence and over our national life, like our geography, history, economy and politics..." ( Late Dr Yusufu Bala Usman ,17th April, 2001).

I see nothing wrong with the present school leaving "certificate" or it equivalent for the number one seat . If the senate feels the "quality"of our "nowadays"secondary certificate is inadequate due to the general belief that , our class "seven" "graduands" of yesteryears were better than our secondary "graduands" of today just as our "secondary" of yesteryears better than our "degree holders "of today, the best thing to do is to "overhaul"the system.

It is sad to note that, our country places too much emphasis on one's "paper"qualifications rather than his or her "ability"or "experience" and or "competence". In my observation , our people have now realized that"what matters most is "certificate" not one's "knowledge"or "practical ability" which is why there is increase in "exams" malpractice and "sex" for "grades" in our society. Certificates racketeering is now very common!

Our employers of labour even in the private sector are not helping matters too. Rather than given emphasis on practical ability they often give emphasis on "First Class" or "Second Class" Upper students.

For us to get it right, we should and or must emphasize on one's qualities or practical ability rather than certificates.

May God bless Nigeria!
