The government policy/decision to remove "History" from the curriculum of Secondary schools in Nigeria effective from 2009/2010 academic session was a terrible mistake, in my candid opinion. What a decade mistake! What a national tragedy! Imagine people without a sense of History!
The minister of education as part of his educational "change agenda" has approved the return of "History"as a subject in our secondary schools. The minister said: "the removal of History was a mistake and that it is part of greatness to correct the mistake". He then called for the disarticulation of Social Studies in the current curriculum and the reintroduction of History as a subject on its own so that children can begin to know who they are. I totally agree that the removal of History in secondary schools was a mistake.
"Somebody who does not know his History is even worse than a dead"-Adamu Adamu,Hon. Minister of Education. History was offered in Secondary schools as an "option" at senior secondary school level across the nation before it was removed. However, in my humble view, History as a subject should not only be returned, but be made "COMPULSORY" at both primary and secondary schools levels. More so, it should equally be made compulsory as a general studies in the Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of education and Mono-technics etc.
Another decision that I align with in the education ministry under its new "change agenda"is the directives by the NUC for the stoppage of Diploma programs by the Universities. Funny enough even the Universities don't give Direct Entry Admission (DE) to their Diploma students, except of course, few ones with "UPPER CREDIT" ,specialization matters! Polytechnics are constitutionally allowed to run Diploma courses while the Universities are given the mandate to run Degree courses. Universities run Diploma courses for commercial purposes (business venture for IGR).
Post UME scrapping is another "change agenda" introduced. Post UME was initially introduced due to high level of corruption in "JAMB" where machineries were used for students to pass. The universities always argue for standard as the reason, hence, the need of Post UME. However, with the passage of time it became "money making venture" to many Universities. The minister of education now felt that, with the introduction of the COMPUTER base examination which recognizes "Finger Prints" on the person that registered the fear of "machineries" and other "irregularities" is solved. The Universities are still resisting because of its money making opportunities (IGR). If the Universities insist on it, let it be "FREE" of charge.
May God bless Nigeria!
