"There are always four sides to a story: Your side, their side, the truth and what really happened "- Jean Jacques Rousseau
Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state has faulted president Jonathan's account on Boko Haram Insurgency/Terrorism and Chibor School Girls abduction in his new book called "My Transition Hours".
In the coming weeks, it is very likely that, former President Jonathan's "memoir" which was launched on the 20th of November, 2018, will generate a lot of reactions from different quoters.
However, my view has always been that, the best way to respond to a "mispresentation"or"distortion"of facts in a written book, is by writing a book in order to set the records straight, at least if not for nothing, but for posterity .
Documenting ones' account in writing would outlive the writer's generation and many more generations to come. It would enable the future generations to Judge things fairly well in a matter involving two or more parties with different versions on an issue.
I call on Governor Kashim Shettima to write a book on Boko Haram Insurgency/Terrorism and Chibok Girls abduction with his on side of the story. Failure to document a counter narrative inform of a book by Governor Shettima would make the future generations to accept president Jonathan's accounts without question.
It is a political culture in the Western world that political leaders always write about their stewardship in order to justify their "actions"or "inactions" while in power. Writing ones' account would go along way in assisting future leaders to "learn" and or "avoid" some "mistakes" which were committed by their leaders past.
In my observation, majority of the officers that fought the Nigerian Civil War from the Nigerian side have not done enough in documenting their accounts of the war. Ninety eight percent of the books written were one-sided accounts written by the Biafran side or their sympathizers.
This in my view, is responsible for the perennial agitation for Biafra which is mostly being carried out by the youth who lacked proper historical accounts on the war. We need a balance account on the war not the one-sided account presently in circulation.
We need a balance record that will promote genuine national reconciliation, integration, and unity, but not the ones currently in circulation. I call on some of the military officers still alive to please quickly write something about the war in order to set the records straight for the future and national development as well as unity.
We must be reminded that, In the next fifty years when most of the people from the generation of those officers who fought the war are gone we would be left with the “Books” written by one-sided accounts to which the future generations would accept it as facts.
May God bless Nigeria!
